Eberhard Umbach, Prof.

Eberhard Umbach (born 1948 in Bad Lauterberg) is a German physicist.

He studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and received his doctorate in 1980 with honors. After conducting research in the United States he habilitated at the TU Munich in 1986.

Umbach was professor at the University of Stuttgart from 1987 to 1993 and professor and institute director at the University of Würzburg from 1993 to 2007. He is external member of the Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max-Planck Society in Berlin.

From 2006-2008 he was president of the German Physical Society, then for two more years vice president. From 2007 until 2009 he was chairman of the Research Center Karlsruhe. From October 2009 Eberhard Umbach served jointly with Horst Hippler as founding president of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and became its sole president in 2012 until his retirement in September 2013. Between 2007 and 2013 he was also vice president of the Helmholtz Association responsible for the research field energy. From 2012 until 2014 he served as president of CLUSTER, an association of leading technical universities in Europe.

Umbach is a member of the executive board of acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering
