Marc Fleurbaey

Marc Fleurbaey is the Robert E. Kuenne Professor in Economics and Humanistic Studies at Princeton University (Woodrow Wilson School and Center for Human Values) and a former member of the Collège d’Etudes Mondiales (Paris FMSH). He graduated from ENSAE in 1986 and has a PhD in economics from Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris). He has previously worked at INSEE (Paris), University of Cergy-Pontoise, University of Pau, CNRS and University Paris-Descartes, and has held visiting positions at Oxford, Louvain-la-Neuve, and London School of Economics. 

 

His research has contributed to the theory of social choice and fair allocation and included applications to health policy, education, income taxation, climate mitigation, and the construction of indicators of well-being and social welfare. He is the co-author of Beyond GDP (with Didier Blanchet, Cambridge University Press 2013), A Theory of Fairness and Social Welfare (with François Maniquet, Cambridge University Press 2011), and the author of Fairness, Responsibility and Welfare (Oxford University Press, 2008). He is the coordinating editor of Social Choice and Welfare and an associate editor of Philosophy and Public Affairs as well as Politics, Philosophy and Economics. 

 

He was a member of the Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi commission on the measurement of economic performance and social progress, a coordinating lead author for the IPCC 5th Report, and one of the initiators of the International Panel on Social Progress (and lead author of its Manifesto for Social Progress, Cambridge University Press 2018). He is a member of the United Nations Committee for Development Policy. He has co-chaired task forces of the T20 in 2017 and 2018. 

 

He received an honorary degree from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, and the Revue Economique prize.
